Aside from the glaringly obvious security risks this would introduce—putting the personal data of millions of Canadians at greater risk—this is a massive dystopian encroachment on privacy that most people do not want.

The government is supposed to serve the people, not expand surveillance in ways that create new cybersecurity and privacy risks. If even companies like Facebook, which have been repeatedly criticized for their handling of user data, are raising concerns, that should make lawmakers stop and think.

Requiring government-issued ID or similarly sensitive personal information for age verification has already led to data breaches and tens of thousands of not more identity documents being exposed(Discord alone had at least 70,000 IDs leaked). I don’t understand why politicians believe this will somehow magically be different on a much larger scale once Bill C-22 is implemented. Every new database of sensitive personal information becomes another target for hackers.

Please reconsider this legislation and prioritize Canadians’ privacy, security, and digital rights, instead of creating unnecessary risks and ignoring the wishes of the people the government is supposed to be serving.
