Not relying on coal and natural gas, which we have in abundance in this province and being forced to only use “clean energy” sources is both unrealistic and economically damaging. While I am all for trying to protect the environment, I don’t feel it should come at the expense of people’s livelihoods. In the last two decades alone, thousands of people were laid off in Alberta because of coal plants being shut down and oil companies reducing production. As was pointed out in the accompanying article, what good is having wind turbines when there is no wind? What good are solar panels if there’s not enough sunlight (especially during the winter) to charge them? The idea that we should ONLY rely on clean energy sources is ridiculous and completely unrealistic. Alberta doesn’t have the climate of southern California. Furthermore, electricity generation is under provincial jurisdiction. Albertans need to speak up and fight for their right to determine how electricity is generated in their own province.

There can always be combined efforts to make sure all our needs are met. During times of extreme heat and cold are not times to be cutting back or shutting down on what has been proven to help. Sure we can cut back excessive usage during these times, but not to be a detriment to our safety and well-being
